Tottenham´s Lamela signs to 2022

Erik Lamela has followed fellow Tottenham forward Son Heung-min in signing a new contract, committing his future to the club to 2022.

Son agreed a five-year deal earlier on Friday and Lamela has also agreed to extend his time at Tottenham by signing fresh terms.

Although his career has been disrupted by injury in recent years, Lamela made 25 Premier League appearances last term as Spurs qualified for the Champions League again.

And although Tottenham are yet to make any new signings ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, new contracts for Son and the Argentine are a positive boost for manager Mauricio Pochettino.

We are delighted to announce that has signed a new contract with the Club, which will run until 2022.

Cavani retires from international football ahead of Copa America

Edinson Cavani has announced his retirement from international football, meaning he will not represent Uruguay at the Copa America.

The 37-year-old is Uruguay’s second-most capped player with 136 appearances, and their second-highest scorer (58) behind only Luis Suarez.

Cavani made his debut in a friendly draw with Colombia in February 2008 and was part of the team that won the 2011 Copa America title.

However, the striker has not made an appearance for his national team since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when they were knocked out in the group stages.

In a post on social media, Cavani said: My beloved Celeste, I just want to thank you for every lesson you gave me under your process.

Koeman fumes after coming up short in ´all facets of football´ against Germany

Ronald Koeman believed his Netherlands side fell short in all facets of football after they slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Germany in the Nations League on Monday.

Jamie Leweling netted the only goal of the encounter at the Allianz Arena, marking his senior international debut in style to put his nation on the brink of qualification.

The Netherlands struggled during the contest, ending the game with an expected goals (xG) total of just 0.13, with Donyell Malen s 89th minute effort their only attempt on target.

Koeman s side also managed just eight touches in the opposition box compared to Germany s 26, despite edging the possession at the full-time whistle.

If you go back too far, you bring that on yourself, Koeman said.

We came up short on all si…

Donnarumma signs AC Milan contract renewal until 2021

Gianluigi Donnarumma has signed a new four-year deal with AC Milan to disappoint a host of high-profile suitors.

The 18-year-old goalkeeper brought the long-running saga over his future to an end by committing to the San Siro club until 2021, with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain having been credited with an interest in him.

Donnarumma, who is represented by agent Mino Raiola, had rejected an offer to extend his contract beyond 2018, but the promise of improved terms – thought to be €6million a month – have encouraged a change of heart.

The news comes after prolonged speculation over Donnarumma s intentions, with the Italy international having been widely tipped to leave.

Emery hoping competitiveness translates into first home win

Unai Emery is hoping Aston Villa can channel their competitive spirit once more as they aim for a first home win of the season against Everton.

Villa have so far won both of their away matches against West Ham and Leicester City by a 2-1 scoreline, digging deep to get their six points on the board.

However, they struggled at home against Arsenal, losing 2-0 despite having more attempts and creating a higher expected goals tally.

And despite Everton s recent struggles, Emery expects them to have to fight for the three points when they face off at Villa Park.

Every game is difficult, but we compete, Emery said. We did against Arsenal as well. We compete really well.

Competitive is what we want to be, but we always want to improve and try to perfor…

Houghton left out as England confirm squad for Euro 2022

Steph Houghton has not been named in England s squad for the upcoming Euro 2022 tournament.

Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman named her 23-woman squad on Wednesday, and included recently recovered Manchester City forward Chloe Kelly and Chelsea s Fran Kirby.

There was no place for former captain Houghton, though, who has not played since January after suffering an Achilles injury.

The Manchester City defender has appeared at five major tournaments for England and made 121 appearances so far in her international career.

Speaking at a media conference for the squad announcement at St George s Park, Wiegman confirmed:  It was a hard decision [to leave Houghton out], but she s just not ready to compete.

We set a plan in place with her for her a…

Italy 1-1 England (aet, 3-2 pens): Donnarumma´s shootout heroics clinch Euro 2020

Gianluigi Donnarumma was Italy s hero as he saved from Bukayo Saka to clinch a 3-2 penalty shootout victory over England after a 1-1 draw in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

Jordan Pickford saved two of Italy s spot-kicks, yet it was his counterpart who came up with the goods to clinch the Azzurri s second European Championship title.

It was a night that started so well for England, with Luke Shaw scoring the quickest goal in a Euro final.

Yet mounting Italy pressure told when Leonardo Bonucci scored midway through the second half, and after late substitutes Marcus Rashford hit the post and Jadon Sancho failed to beat Donnarumma in the shootout, Saka fell foul of Italy s goalkeeper as England suffered heartbreak on home soil.

It could hardly have sta…

Koke: Atletico in better shape to beat Real than in 2014

Koke feels Atletico Madrid are in a better shape to beat Real Madrid in next week s Champions League final than they were in 2014.

Atletico were beaten 4-1 after extra-time by their great rivals two years ago, but that meeting in Lisbon came just a week after an intense, league title-winning 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Camp Nou.

This time around, Diego Simeone s team will have had two weeks rest before their showdown at San Siro, and Koke feels they will be much fresher.

We ve had more time to prepare than the 2014 final in Lisbon, that year we d just played the league decider against Barcelona and were tired, this year we re better physically, he said at a news conference.

We ve had two weeks to prepare and have done so very enthusiastically.

Nottingham Forest battle to victory as Manchester United end 2023 with defeat

Morgan Gibbs-White fired Nottingham Forest to a first victory against Manchester United since 1994 as Erik ten Hag’s side ended a topsy-turvy year with a whimper.

The Red Devils had won the sides’ last 11 meetings in all competitions, but new boss Nuno Espirito Santo would celebrate a memorable second win in just five days.

Gibbs-White’s super late strike from the edge of the box wrapped up a memorable 2-1 triumph after Marcus Rashford had capitalised on a terrible Matt Turner pass to cancel out Nicolas Dominguez’s opener.

WHAT A WAY TO END 2023!
