Beckenbauer wants corruption report made public

Former FIFA executive committee member Franz Beckenbauer has called for the report into 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids to be made public.

FIFA announced that Russia would hold the 2018 event, with Qatar to act as hosts four years later, back in 2010.

The decision was met with criticism in some quarters, and allegations of corruption within global football s governing body were made before FIFA s chief ethics investigator Michael Garcia subsequently led a probe into the matter.

After briefly being suspended from football-related activity for failing to co-operate with the report, West Germany legend Beckenbauer has since complied and has now called for further transparency.

Barcelona and Real Madrid handed third-tier Copa del Rey tests

Holders Barcelona will begin their Copa del Rey defence against Murcia in the fourth round, while Real Madrid face third-tier Fuenlabrada.

Barca continued their dominance of the domestic cup competition last season with a third successive triumph, the 29th in their history.

A 3-1 win in the final against Alaves was Barca s second trophy of their final campaign under Luis Enrique, the Catalan giants also lifting the Supercopa de Espana.

Third division Murcia will provide the first test of this season s competition, with Ernesto Valverde s side travelling to Nueva Condomina on October 25.

Pulis tips Liverpool for title tilt

West Brom boss Tony Pulis said Liverpool have a prime opportunity to win the Premier League this season after his side went down 2-1 at Anfield.

First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho put the dominant hosts in complete control before half-time.

Gareth McAuley did pull one back for the Baggies with just under 10 minutes remaining, but an equaliser would have been unjust as Jurgen Klopp s side moved joint top, behind Arsenal only on goal difference.

Liverpool s last league title came in 1990, although Brendan Rodgers Luis Suarez-inspired side came agonisingly close in 2013-14, but Pulis believes their absence from European competition this season benefits their cause.

They re a good side, with the players they ve got and on the bench, they…

Eriksen and Van de Beek need to be given time, says fellow Ajax graduate Seedorf

Clarence Seedorf does not believe Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek should not be written off yet as they struggle to make impacts at Inter and Manchester United respectively.

Like Seedorf, both players came through the heralded Ajax academy before making switches to the Premier League.

Eriksen enjoyed six-and-a-half successful years at Tottenham before joining Inter in January, while Van de Beek signed for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer s side ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

Having found himself on the periphery of the team during his latter days at Spurs, Denmark international Eriksen was lacking momentum upon joining Inter and made only eight Serie A starts before the end of the 2019-20 season.

It has not gone much better for him this term, the 28-ye…

Prediction: Liverpool vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Best odds: 3/4

Bookmaker:

It s round 11 in the 2020/21 Premier League season this week, and there should be a lot of interesting stuff to see. The game which should arguably attract the most attention will be the North-London Derby on Sunday afternoon, closely followed by the clash between Liverpool and Wolvrhampton Wanderers at Anfield in the evening.

Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp and his team will be happy with what they ve done in the Champions League so far. Their 1-0 victory against Ajax means they are now guaranteed not only to reach the knockout stages, but to finish top of Group D as well, leaving the Dutch side to do battle with Atalanta on the final matchday for the second place. They won t have a care in the world when they take the trip to Denmark to play …

European giants battling for Siqueira; Kalou wants Chelsea stay

European giants battling for Siqueira

A number of major European clubs are showing interest in Granada full-back Guilherme Siqueira, .

The 25-year-old has been earning rave reviews for his performances in La Liga this season and he could be a subject of a real bidding war in the summer.

According to AS, Manchester United, Barcelona, Valencia, Atletico Madrid and Benfica are all interested in Siquiera.

The talented full-back has a contract until June 2015 with Granada and a release clause of €15 million, but it looks as though the La Liga minnows will not be able to keep hold of their prized asset.

Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola has already confirmed his interest in the Brazilian, whereas AS claims that Sir Alex Ferguson’s brother Martin watched…

We’ll throw everything at title bid – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold insists the squad plan to “throw everything” at their final six matches of the season as they try to finish Jurgen Klopp’s final season on a high.

Only a month ago the talk was still of an unprecedented quadruple with the Carabao Cup already in the trophy cabinet but FA Cup and Europa League exits, plus a slip-up in the league, has left them with just one focus.

The task of overhauling Manchester City’s two-point advantage, and also getting ahead of Arsenal, is not an inconsiderable one but Alexander-Arnold said in the aftermath of their Europa League exit to Atalanta despite a 1-0 victory in Bergamo that the players had spoken about what remained of their campaign.

Pogba wants Man Utd exit – Raiola

Paul Pogba wants to leave Manchester United and is in the process of securing a transfer, according to his agent Mino Raiola.

Pogba hinted at being unsettled at Old Trafford last month, telling reporters in Japan he was interested in a new challenge three years after returning to United from Juventus.

A move back to Juve has been mooted for the World Cup winner, while Real Madrid and Barcelona are also rumoured to be interested in the playmaker.

Raiola, who negotiated Pogba s then world-record move to United in 2016, did not offer any indication as to Pogba s preferred destination, but made his client s intentions clear.

Everyone within the club, from the manager to the owner, knows Paul s wishes, Raiola told The Times.

Docherty: If Mourinho were made of chocolate, he´d eat himself

Tommy Docherty is not a huge fan of Jose Mourinho, with the former Manchester United manager saying if he were made of chocolate he would eat himself.

Mourinho has led United s revival and their best run of form since the Alex Ferguson era following Monday s 2-0 Premier League win at West Ham.

Goals from Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic made it seven wins from as many matches for United across all competitions, and 13 games unbeaten in total the club s longest unbeaten streak since March 2013.

But Docherty, who guided United to FA Cup glory in 1977 during his five-year spell in charge at Old Trafford, is not convinced by the Portuguese boss.

He s done okay, but if he were made of chocolate he would eat himself, the 88-year-old told the Evening Times.
